State of the Dead
The Bible frequently describes death as a sleep from which the dead are awakened at the resurrection. This study can be used to compare biblical teaching about life, death, immortality, resurrection, and judgment.
What Happens at Death?
Scripture describes human life as dependent upon God. At death the body returns to the earth, while the life-giving breath returns to God who gave it.
Death Compared to Sleep
Jesus and the apostles often used the language of sleep when speaking about death. The comparison emphasizes unconscious rest and the certainty of a future awakening.
The Hope of the Resurrection
The Christian hope is centered on resurrection at the return of Christ. First Thessalonians 4:13–18 describes the dead in Christ rising when Jesus returns.
Immortality and Eternal Life
The Bible presents God as the source of immortality and eternal life as His gift. This section can later address common questions and compare frequently quoted passages.
